2024 OCT 29 Meet Mr. Justice Jeremy Johnson KC the judge who sentenced The Lion of UK Tommy Robinson to 18 months for contempt of court.
He has got a very interesting work history…
without prejudice
OPINIONS
In 2007, Johnson represented MI6 as an observer at the inquests into the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed.1 This was highly unusual as MI6 doesn't typically appoint lawyers to inquests.
Johnson also represented the UK Ministry of Defence multiple times.2
In 2013, he defended MoD in the Al-Sweady inquiry, addressing allegations of torture and unlawful killings by British soldiers in Iraq.3
He also acted for MoD in 2011 on a case involving a serviceman seeking compensation for neurological damage he suffered while serving in the RAF.4
Appointed by the Attorney General in 2007 as a “special advocate,” Johnson held the highest government security clearance—known as “Developed Vetting”—typically reserved for handling TOP SECRET matters.5
4CM FYI: In 2016, Johnson acted as a special advocate in the case of Abdel Hakim Belhaj, a Libyan national who accused the UK government and MI6 of participating in kidnapping him and his pregnant wife, Fatima Bouchar. The UK government. Later apologized for its actions that contributed to Belhaj and Bouchar’s rendition, detention and torture.6
How much exactly Johnson has been paid in total for such work, we don't know. Records show he was paid twice by the Government Legal Department for his services in 2018—to the tune of £55,000.7
He also recently ruled on Julian Assange’s extradition case, allowing the U.S. to proceed as long as certain “assurances” were met.8
4CM FYI: THE FINAL OUTCOME: “WikiLeaks founder Assange wins right to appeal against an extradition order to the US High Court judges” Victoria Sharp and Jeremy Johnson ruled for Assange after his lawyers argued that the U.S. government provided “blatantly inadequate” assurances that he would have the same free speech protections as an American citizen if extradited from Britain.9
Human rights advocates were dismayed by his ruling, calling such assurances unreliable. Investigative journalist Stefania Maurizi remarked, “Once again the UK justice lost an opportunity to do justice.”10
Amnesty International11 also criticized the decision for hiding behind “the fig leaf of ‘assurances,’12” suggesting that the extradition fight was less about justice and more about silencing whistle-blowers and journalists.13
Assange, too weak to appear at the proceedings14 Johnson presided over, had remained imprisoned for years at this point—in Belmarsh, a Maximum-Security Prison.
“(The) decision is astounding,” said Stella Assange15
4CM FYI: Meet Justice Jeremy Johnson who sent Ike Ekweremadu, wife and Dr Obeta to prison.

The MoD’s lawyers said the Iraqi allegations were a “product of lies” and that those making the claims “were guilty of a criminal conspiracy”. | Johnson argued there was “compelling and extensive and independent forensic evidence” to refute the case. The five-year inquiry, which cost around £25m, exonerated the British troops. https://www.declassifieduk.org/julian-assange-judge-previously-acted-for-mi6/ }
{Jeremy Johnson | Johnson also acted for the MoD in 2011, in an appeal case against Shaun Wood, a Royal Air Force (RAF) serviceman. | Wood had the previous year won his case claiming compensation against the MoD, arguing his neurological condition akin to Parkinson’s disease was caused by exposure to organic solvents while serving in the RAF. | The judge upheld Wood’s claim against the MoD, which had admitted a breach of duty but disputed that this had caused the damage claimed by him. https://www.declassifieduk.org/julian-assange-judge-previously-acted-for-mi6/ }

{Jeremy Johnson | JUDGMENT: {1st paragraph} The Divisional Court considers that Mr Assange has a real prospect of success on 3 of the 9 grounds of appeal (grounds iv), v) and ix)). It has given the Government of the United States of America and the Secretary of State an opportunity to offer assurances that would address those grounds of appeal. Unless satisfactory assurances are provided, the Court will grant leave to appeal on those grounds of appeal. The Court refuses leave to appeal on the other 6 grounds (i), ii), iii), vi), vii) and viii)) which do not have any merit. {2nd paragraph} Mr. Assange will not, therefore, be extradited immediately. The Court has given the Government of the United States 3 weeks to give satisfactory assurances: that Mr Assange is permitted to rely on the First Amendment to the United States Constitution (which protects free speech), that he is not prejudiced at trial (including sentence) by reason of his nationality, that he is afforded the same First Amendment protections as a United States citizen and that the death penalty is not imposed. {3rd paragraph} If those assurances are not given, then leave to appeal will be given and there will then be an appeal hearing. If assurances are given then the parties will have a further opportunity to make representations, and there will be a further hearing on 20 May 2024 to decide if the assurances are satisfactory, and to make a final decision on leave to appeal. https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Assange-Press-Summary.pdf }
