OPINION
You do have to fight to keep freedom, because there are always people who say Oh give a little bit more power to government and then a little bit more, and then a little bit more. Then one day you’ve got so many people employed by a Government that they have vested interest in keeping more and more power in the hands of Government and less in the hands of people No it shall not be. The Governments are there to serve the liberties of the people, not restrict them. (Margaret Thatcher PM of the UK 1991 Nov 13)
FREEDOM has a price its not FREE:
Polity and bureaucrats always clawing for more power and
bit by bit becoming intoxicated by:
powers unbridled that led to tyrannies and dictators.
AI Opinion:
The passage highlights the importance of actively defending freedom against those who advocate for increased government power, arguing that such power grabs can lead to a situation where government employees, with vested interests, seek to further concentrate power, ultimately restricting individual liberties instead of serving them.
Key Arguments:
• The Slippery Slope of Power:
The passage warns against incremental increases in government power, suggesting that these seemingly small steps can accumulate and lead to a significant erosion of individual freedoms.
• Vested Interests:
It posits that as the government workforce grows, individuals employed by it develop a vested interest in maintaining and expanding government power, potentially at the expense of the people's liberties.
• Government's Role:
The passage firmly states that governments should exist to serve the liberties of the people, not to restrict them.
• The Need for Vigilance:
The passage emphasizes the need for constant vigilance and active defense of freedom, as it is not something that can be taken for granted.
RONALD REAGAN, “EVIL EMPIRE SPEECH” (8 MARCH 1983)
[9] The American experiment in democracy rests on this insight. Its discovery was the great triumph of our Founding Fathers, voiced by William Penn when he said: “If we will not be governed by God, we must be governed by tyrants.” Explaining the inalienable rights of men, Jefferson said, “The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time.” And it was George Washington who said that “of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”
[10] And finally, that shrewdest of all observers of American democracy, Alexis de Tocqueville, put it eloquently, after he had gone on a search for the secret of America’s greatness and genius–and he said: “Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the greatness and the genius of America. America is good. And if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
